The Finnish Approach to Learning

Finnish education is distinct from most international curricular in a number of important ways.

    It takes wellbeing seriously. Finnish educators understand that a learner who is stressed, unhappy, or disengaged cannot learn effectively.     Our Junior School provides a nurturing, stimulating environment for younger learners. The curriculum is play-informed in the earliest years and becomes progressively more structured as learners develop, always in line with Finnish principles of child-centred learning.

    Cross-curricular themes run throughout the Junior School, and our team-teaching model ensures that children benefit from the combined expertise of multiple educators. Learners leave the Junior School with strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, and inquiry skills, and with the social and emotional qualities they need to thrive in the Senior School and beyond.

    Senior School

    Our Senior School builds on those foundations with greater depth, independence, and intellectual challenge. Learners are prepared for external qualifications while maintaining the Finnish emphasis on curiosity, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving.

    As learners progress through the Senior School, they take on greater responsibility for their own learning. They engage in extended projects, cross-disciplinary enquiry, and independent study that develops the skills universities and employers value most.

Assessment

Finland International School Maldives does not use high-stakes standardised testing as the primary measure of learner progress.
We use continuous, formative assessment: ongoing observation, discussion, and portfolio development that captures the
full range of what a learner can do and who they are becoming.

This approach means learners are understood as complex, developing individuals rather than being defined by a single test score.
Families receive regular, meaningful progress updates through structured reports and parent-educator meetings.
